28 May 2010

Congratulations to all our HND Year 2 students, who wowed a select group from the Creative Industries last night at the Industry Night Show. The show took place at Paul Bock's Studio 128 and was a terrific success. Each student present a work-in-progress of their final project, and all received plenty of insightful and positive feedback from the creatives and professionals in attendance.

The Design Team, the Industry Mentors, and Year 2 students all wore red 'Not Another Student Show' t-shirts, and the HND Year 1 lent a hand and wore the black and white version. Edinburgh Telford's New Principal Miles Dibsdall also managed to come along and was impressed by the quality of the work and professionalism of the whole show.

The DRUM today features a short review and some photography by Ian Millar who captured the events of the evening. We'll put a gallery of imges up as soon as we have all the images.

Next up will be the Great Big Art Show, where out NC Graphics are exhibiting, and then the Final Exhibition, beginning 10 June at the Dovecot Gallery.

D&AD In Book Award Winner - Artur Pasiek

20 May 2010

More than 3000 students entered the D&AD Student Awards this year from almost 300 colleges – up 20% on 2009. Of those, 83 were nominated for Yellow Pencils, and 200 made it to In-Book.

One of those was our very own HND Year 2 student Artur Pasiek. A D&AD Award is a fantastic achievement, and a huge career boost – 43% of D&AD winners are in employment within four weeks of gaining their award.

Artur will be attending the Award ceremony in London on June 29th, along with tutors David Wilson and Chris Hughes.

Award Details:
Title: Advertising - Brand Communications
Sponsor: The Body Shop
Task : Create an unconventional brand campaign for The Body Shop to reinstate its position as the original pioneer of ethical beauty.

Artur’s solution was to produce strong edgy straplines with a contemporary tone, and an organic feel. This clear and simple approach harked back to the Body Shop’s original successes in communicating their brand as unambiguous, ground-breaking, and ethically attractive.

Drumming Up Some Publicity

18 May 2010

The current print issue of The DRUM Magazine, the design and media industry publication, features an article on this summer's upcoming College Degree Shows across Scotland and the North East.

The piece features work by final year students from the likes of Dundee College of Art, ECA, Glasgow School of Art, Gray's, and Edinburgh Telford, as well as the dates and venues of all the shows. HND 2 work featured from Telford is by Hannah Bloomfield, Duncan McLeod, Artur Pasiek and Amanda Gliddon.

As an added bonus, the online DRUM carries an 'InDepth' piece on Edinburgh Telford's HND Year, which includes samples of all our HND students' work and information on our Industry Night.

Not Another Student Show

11 May 2010

The Design team is about to launch its 'Industry Night' promotional campaign for the 2010 event.

After two previous years Out-Of-The-Blue Drill Hall venue in Leith, we have moved to Studio 128, run by Edinburgh photographer Paul Bock.

Tutors, practitioners, critics and mentors will all be in attendance - a select group of industry professionals and educators who have collaborated with and guided the students on their journey towards employment within the creative industries.

Attendees will get the opportunity to see selections of final project work in progress.

This year the campaign has been designed by final year student Artur Pasiek and will include some very cool invites, t-shirts and badges. HND Year 1 will be providing hospitality.

Design Splatters

4 May 2010

Year 1 Graphic Design had some fun recently designing coverart for an upcoming band's debut CD.

The students set up a space in the college where they could create paint footprints and tracks on a large canvas, in response to music being played live by the band.

The resulting abstracts were then photographed and will be used as part of the CD cover design.

The event was organised by Ian Kirkby of Lewis Design.
