It's Not All Rubbish

27 May 2011

Check out some great samples from the HND 1 Graded Unit work on our gallery page. This year the group was given the choice of four briefs -

1)Forthquarter - develop signage for the National Grid's Forthquarter development in Edinburgh
2)IAMS - rebrand IAMS dogfood
3)Shoot the Bunny - highlight the advantages of disposable batteries
4)Rubbish - reinvent the printed magazine.

The full pieces of work are currently on display outside the Design Studio and will form part of the Great Big Art Show - our in-house exhibition in the Hub during the first week of June.

For some tasters of the upcoming Not Another Student Show - for final year students - check out the event website at www.etcshow.net.

Marketing Society Creative Student Awards

26 May 2011

Congratulations to HND 2 student Ross Duncan, who picked up Silver for Creative Student at the annual Marketing Society Awards on Thursday 19th May,

The event took place in Glasgow, and we had two nominees in attendance - Ross and Gill McColl. Both students had already been through a written submission and a presentation with the judging panel for the 'Makers Mark' brief.

The Gold award went to Sophie D'Agostino - a final year student at Dundee, who previously gained her HND in Visual Communication here at Edinburgh's Telford.

Banging the Drum for 2011 Show

15 May 2011

With our 'Not Another Student Show' 2011 in the final stages of preparation, the HND Graphic Design course has been receiving some good press coverage.

The DRUM has again featured our students in its round-up of Degree Show previews - alongside Glasgow School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone, University of Lincoln, and Grey’s School of Art.

We've also received some great press on the STV website - an article featuring quotes from D&AD InBook winners Abbie Macpherson and Jonny Paterson, both HND Graphic Design Year 1.

We Love GFSmith Paper

4 May 2011

Colorplan sampler

HND 1 and 2 were treated to an excellent talk today from Paul and Matthew Scharf of GF Smith - the Hull-based organisation which sources, develops & manufactures some of the world's best-quality paper for the Graphics and Printing Industries.

The guys took the students through GFSmith's major collections, which included their many text and cover grades used for all major print processes including, lithography, letterpress, silk screen, blind embossing, foil blocking and die stamping.

For over a hundred years GFSmith has consistently worked with the best graphic designers, photographers and artists. These collaborations have resulted in a catalogue of iconic promotional materials. Amongst the examples showcased were stunning contemporary work by designers from Total, Dalton Maag, and Pentagram, and classics from the 60's and 70's by the likes of Paul Rand, Bill Mackay, Saul Bass and Milton Glaser.

The class also got to get some hands on samples from the Colorplan range, and GFSmith have kindly agreed to supply paper for the HND year 2 final project work this session.

And clearly GFSmith believe that print is alive and well and will never die - Paul's closing quote was 'paper will always have an immediacy and power that pixels never will'.
