Essential Summer Reading

5 July 2012

Just before the summer break I checked with the college library for new additions, and was delighted to see that '100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design' had finally arrived.

100 ideas that changed design coverLeading design writer Steven Heller and critic Veronique Vienne have collaborated to produce a nicely conceived exploration of the concepts, styles and techniques which influenced and transformed graphic design.

Each idea is presented in approximately chronological order, and the essay writing is informative, insightful and hugely readable. Examples featured are too many to mention, but rest assured all the key movements and their leading exponents are in there, and of course the layout and typesetting is a joy.

#9 Monumental Images.

#26 Graphic Design Magazines.

#48 Triangulation.

#100 Designers' websites.

Extracts appeared earlier this year in Creative Review, and the book is part of a series by publisher Laurence King which also includes '100 Ideas that Changed Architecture' and '100 Ideas that Changed Fashion'.

Please read this book. The only thing wrong with it is that they stopped at 100.
